Watoto Rise Foundation (WRF) is a community based, non profit organization based in Mbale, Eastern Uganda. It was formed to support children from very low income families, orphans, disaster affected children, and those at risk of dropping out of school. Eastern Uganda, especially the Mount Elgon and Mbale area, has experienced several deadly landslides and floods over the years. For example, the 2010 Bududa landslides killed over 300 people and left many families homeless. Other landslides have continued to affect the Elgon region, destroying homes, schools, and farmland. Many children have lost parents, shelter, and access to education because of these disasters. Poverty levels in Eastern Uganda remain extremely high. Many families struggle to provide basic needs like food, clothing, school fees, and medical care. Because of this, many children either never enroll in school or drop out early. Teenage pregnancy is also a major challenge. In the region, about 25% of girls aged 11–15 have begun childbearing. In some parts of Eastern Uganda, the numbers are even higher. Many girls drop out of school due to pregnancy and do not return. Gender Based Violence (GBV) is another serious concern. National reports show that more than half of Ugandan women have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. Children, especially girls, are affected by abuse, early marriage, neglect, and exploitation. Because of poverty, violence, disasters, and low education levels, many children in the region grow up without opportunities for a better future. Watoto Rise Foundation was started to respond to these challenges by providing protection, education support, and hope to vulnerable children so they can rise above their circumstances.
